Crew repatriation inside 24 hours is achievable, but the flying is rarely the hard part. What decides the timeline is documentation: passports held by the master, expired seafarer visas, shore pass approvals and whether the port state will let people off the vessel at all. Get those moving in the first two hours and a jet can be wheels up the same evening. Miss them and no aircraft in the world helps. The scale of the problem is not small either. The ITF recorded 6,223 seafarers abandoned across 410 ships in 2025, a record year and roughly a third worse than 2024.<\/p>\n
Four situations account for most urgent repatriations.<\/p>\n
Vessel arrest or owner insolvency, where the ship is detained and wages stop. The IMO and ILO define abandonment partly as\u00a0non-payment of contractual wages for at least two months<\/a>, alongside failure to fund repatriation.<\/p>\n Medical evacuation, where one crew member needs a hospital and the rest of the rotation collapses behind them.<\/p>\n Political or security disruption, where a port closes or an airspace shuts and the scheduled crew change window disappears.<\/p>\n Contract expiry, which sounds administrative until you remember the Maritime Labour Convention limits continuous service on board and entitles the seafarer to be sent home at no cost to themselves.<\/p>\n Worth noting: in 185 of the 2025 cases reported to the joint database, there was no compulsory financial guarantee in place. Somebody has to pay for the aircraft, and that question is often unresolved when the phone call comes.<\/p>\nWhat the 24 hours actually looks like<\/h2>\n
